We’re finally approaching spring, a time of year best known for new growth and fresh starts. At ACJ Search, we’re expecting to see a real buzz of excitement and activity within the recruitment industry. So – what do we know?

A recent study commissioned by workspace company, Beyond, suggested that more and more UK employees are considering a career change by the end of 2024, as much as 40%! A large number of those hoping for a fresh start will do so to achieve a better work/life balance.

Does this trend indicate that those COVID years are still impacting our approach to employment?

In short, the data would suggest that yes, trends that emerged as a result of changes to our working patterns during COVID are still driving a big shift in how a candidate will select their next role today.

Key findings indicate that 39% of employees are contemplating job changes, with 47% citing a desire for improved hybrid working policies as a motivating factor. 43% of those who have recently changed jobs attributing their decision to finding employers with superior remote or hybrid work policies.

What makes spring such a good time to start a new role?

Really, it comes down to 3 main factors:

  1. Increased hiring budgets, thanks to a new financial year with fresh growth projections
  2. After Q1, things start to pick up and normal activity resumes
  3. You hire in the spring to fulfil summer requirement

Is it all about seasonal mindsets and springtime opportunities?

Not necessarily. For individuals considering a career transition this spring, the real work begins with turning your focus towards reflective self-assessment or self reflection.
How can you get started?

  1. Utilise available resources effectively. Networking opportunities, online job boards, career coaching services, and skills development programs offer valuable support in navigating the transition
  2. Clarify personal priorities and career objectives. These will help guide you towards making informed decisions with satisfying outcomes.
  3. Do your homework. Make time to research changes in your industry and understand the most up to date “best practice”.

What else would we recommend?

Look out for organisations whose aspirations and values align with your own. The transition from where you are to where you want to be is much easier when you have a clear idea of what you’re looking for, where you might be able to find it and what is absolutely non negotiable. Start your research before things get desperate!

Embrace adaptability and develop resilience. While career transitions present many challenges, they also present opportunities for personal growth and development, as well as a chance to further your professional goals. When you approach change with a positive mindset and a willingness to explore new possibilities, you’ll find your search to be much more successful.
